This paper, written at the request of New Orleans guitar giant Steve Masakowski, is an overview of the harmonic and rhythmic musical structures of 8 of Flamenco's most important song-forms or palos: tonás, seguiyiras, soleá, tangos, bulerías, alegrías, fandangos de huelva, and rumba.
Though written prior to moving to Spain to continue my research in Madrid, it i still a useful tool for the western musician looking to unlock some of the key concepts of the flamenco tradition.
This is an overview of MUS 1611 and MUS 1612, my guitar courses for non-music majors at the University of New Orleans. Special attention is given to the philosophy and goals of such a course. Includes course materials.
